pain' and ┌I think that p┐ express the pain and the thought that p, themselves. The book is most impressive. It is packed with careful argument, and addresses a remarkable range of important issues about the mind. I have very much enjoyed studying it.

The recent book Rush Rhees on Religion and Philosophy contains a stimulating collection of writin~s by Rush Rhees on a variety of topics in the philosophy of religion. Comprising accounts of personal, religious and moral struggles, these essays provide a refreshing change from the often dry, overly technical approach to philosophy writing. Despite spanning more than thirty years, Rhees' s essays disclose a fairly consistent philosophy.of religion with a clear emphasis. Since he was Wittgenstein's student and long-time friend as well (...) as a literary executor ofWittgenstein's writings, it is not surprising that Rhees's comments on the philosophy of religion reveal a distinctly Wittgensteinian approach, both in content and style. Moreover, Rhees's particular way of doing philosophy of religion seems, in retrospect, to have set the course that subsequent philosophy of religion of the Wittgensteinian type would take. (shrink)

It is difficult to see what is the purpose of this collection of articles. Numerous full-length works have appeared dealing with various aspects of Wittgenstein's philosophy as well as several anthologies of articles about Wittgenstein. While the articles here are of a high quality and were written especially for this volume, there seems to be no principle of unity or selection here. Winch's introduction stresses the unity of Wittgenstein's philosophy, but it is too brief to resolve the many questions which (...) have been raised about this unity. Schwayder's article dealing with Wittgenstein on mathematics presents a helpful overview of the central themes in Wittgenstein's reflections. One of the most interesting papers is Frank Cioffi's "Wittgenstein's Freud." There are also papers by Hide Ishiguro, Rush Rhees, John W. Cook, L. R. Reinhardt, and Anthony Manser.--R. J. B. (shrink)

This paper discusses the reasons for Rush Rhees’ sudden cancellation of his study of the phenomenon of continuity. Before he became a follower of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rhees studied the philosophy of Franz Brentano. In his unfinished PhD, Rhees developed Brentano’s phenomenological interpretation of continuity, more specifically, his theory of “plerosis”. Nevertheless, after Rhees aborted his work on continuum, he never returned to it or to Brentano’s philosophy. One of the last events leading up to this ending was the conversation between (...) Rhees and Wittgenstein, which took place in 1938. The author of the article discusses the extent to which Wittgenstein’s reflections may have influenced Rhees’ rejection of Brentano’s philosophical approach and contributed to a fundamental rethinking of his earlier position. The hypothesis of the work is that Wittgenstein’s philosophy caused Rhees to become disillusioned with the phenomenological approach and the traditional way of posing philosophical problems. From his return to Cambridge in 1929 to his death in 1951, Wittgenstein influenced philosophy almost exclusively through teaching and discussion. These lecture notes indicate what he considered to be salient features of his thinking in this period of his life.

This short text provides an introduction to the five papers that follow, all of which reflect on R.S. Peters, his founding importance for contemporary philosophy of education, and his continuing relevance. It sets the scene by referring to Peters’ early and important encounter with Israel Scheffler before going on briefly to acknowledge other work published over the past decade that examines Peters’ achievement. In addition, it explains the background to the fifth paper in this suite. For several terms at Cambridge in 1939, Ludwig Wittgenstein lectured on the philosophical foundations of mathematics. A lecture class taught by Wittgenstein, however, hardly resembled a lecture. He sat on a chair in the middle of the room, with some of the class sitting in chairs, some on the floor. He never used notes. He paused frequently, sometimes for several minutes, while he puzzled out a problem. He often asked his listeners questions and reacted to their replies. Many meetings were (...) largely conversation. These lectures were attended by, among others, D. A. T. Gasking, J. N. Findlay, Stephen Toulmin, Alan Turing, G. H. von Wright, R. G. Bosanquet, Norman Malcolm, Rush Rhees, and Yorick Smythies. Notes taken by these last four are the basis for the thirty-one lectures in this book. The lectures covered such topics as the nature of mathematics, the distinctions between mathematical and everyday languages, the truth of mathematical propositions, consistency and contradiction in formal systems, the logicism of Frege and Russell, Platonism, identity, negation, and necessary truth.
