The aim of this study is to better understand why public officials and business employees engage in corruption. Insight into individual-level explanations for corruption was obtained with the aid of a self-report survey. The results suggest that the most indicative factors of whether or not individuals are corruption-prone are as follows: the moral conviction they have to refrain from corruption; perceptions of whether their colleagues approve of and engage in corruption; and difficulties experienced in complying with the rules on corruption. (...) This result pattern was identical for public officials and business employees alike, and as a consequence, for both sides of corrupt acts. The latter indicates that the same motives may not only underlie corruption in both private and public sectors, but also the act of corruption in its active and passive forms. The results of the current study do not provide strong support for the assumption that economic considerations—expected costs and benefits—are crucial in predicting corruption. Based on the findings that norms and the perceived opportunity to comply are dominant factors in explaining corruption, this article focuses on the practical implications for the development of anti-corruption strategies within both public and private sectors. Der wahre Ausgangspunkt des Heideggerschen Denkens ist nicht die Seinsfrage, sondern die katholische Theologie. Nach seinem Abitur im Sommer 1909 nahm er sein Theologiestudium in der Absicht auf, Priester zu werden. In den theologischen Veröffentlichungen, die vor allem in Der Akademiker erschienen, treten seine katholische Weltanschauung und der antimoderne Charakter seines Denkens (...) klar zutage. Seine Kritik des Modernismus richtet sich vor allem gegen Individualismus, Liberalismus, Naturalismus und das neukantische Streben nach Autonomie; auch die Technik, der zügellose Konsum und das Modebewußtsein werden angeprangert. Dem rasenden, verflachten Leben des modernen Menschen stellt Heidegger das katholische Leben mit seinem Traditionsbewußtsein gegenüber. Das Jerusalem Gottes wird dem neoheidnischen Babylon als ein nachstrebenswürdiges Ideal vorgehalten. Die moderne Welt kann nur von ihren Übeln heilen, indem sie zum ewigen Brunnen aller Wahrheit zurückkehrt. Gegen die Zersplitterung und Nivellierung der modernen Zeit, durch die die Welt eindimensional wird und der Raum der Transzendenz verlorengeht, muß die katholische Gemeinschaft sich zur Wehr setzen und die religiöse Dimension des Lebens mit Händen und Füßen verteidigen. Why is aesthetic experience of nature important in our everyday lives? This will be my main question. After defining the meaning of 'imagination' and 'aesthetic nature' in the context of Seel's thought, I will reflect on two aspects of this question. Firstly, I will focus on the function of imagination within our aesthetic experience of nature. Secondly, I will expose some ethical implications of the aesthetic approach to nature. Particular attention is paid to the meaning of “totipotency, omnipotency and pluripotency” as illustrated by a (...) comparison of the developmental potential of three-dimensional clusters of blastomeres , embryonic stem cells, somatic or stem cells or other somatic cells. This paper focuses on embryoid bodies and on direct cloning by tetraploid complementation. Usage and patenting of these cells cannot be considered to be ethically sound as long as totipotency and tetraploid complementability of embryonic stem cells are not excluded for the specific cell line in question. Diese Neuausgabe des wichtigen Schelling-Fichte-Briefwechsels erfüllt ein Bedürfnis der deutschen Idealismus-Forschung. Gegenüber den früheren Editionen bietet sie entscheidende Vorteile. Erstens basiert diese Studienausgabe auf der vollständigen wissenschaftlich-kritischen Dokumentation des Briefwechsels in der J.G. Fichte Gesamtausgabe und auf der von Erich Fuchs herausgegebenen umfassenden Sammlung der zeitgenössischen Korrespondenz Fichte im Gespräch. Die Zuverlässigkeit der Textedition ist damit hinreichend gesichert. Zweitens hat der Herausgeber, der sich durch sein Buch Johann Gottlieb Fichtes Populärphilosophie 1804-1806 und mehrere Einzelveröffentlichungen als kompetenter Fichte-Forscher erwiesen hat, die (...) Forschungsergebnisse der letzten Jahrzehnten in seinem Kommentar verarbeitet. Although Emmanuel Levinas is widely respected as one of the classic thinkers of our century, the debate about his place within Continental philosophy continues. This phenomenological study begins by presenting trust as a characteristic form of interpersonal and communal relationship. In the second chapter, the scope is narrowed to someone's reliance on one or more trustworthy individuals. Chapters 3 to 5 explore specific aspects of trust, insofar as we confide in social structures or movements, the impersonal regularities and events of nature, or our own particular talents, motivations, and possibilities. In a world that is ravaged by the omnipresence of suffering and the most outrageous (...) manifestations of evil, no philosopher can avoid the question of what kind of trust may be profound and strong enough to overcome the ultimate anxiety or despair that threatens all human existence. This book, the result of 40 years of Hegel research, gives an integral interpretation of G.W.F. Hegel's mature practical philosophy as contained in his textbook, Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, published in 1820, and the courses he gave on the same subject between 1817 and 1830.

In various publications over the past years, Floridi has developed a theory of semantic information as well-formed, meaningful, and truthful data. This theory is more or less orthogonal to the standard entropy-based notions of information known from physics, information theory, and computer science that all define the amount of information in a certain system as a scalar value without any direct semantic implication. In this context the question rises what the exact relation between these various conceptions of information is and (...) whether there is a real need to enrich these mathematically more or less rigid definitions with a less formal notion of semantic information. I investigate various philosophical aspects of the more formal definitions of information in the light of Floridi’s theory. The position I defend is that the formal treatment of the notion of information as a general theory of entropy is one of the fundamental achievements of modern science that in itself is a rich source for new philosophical reflection. This makes information theory a competitor of classical epistemology rather than a servant. In this light Floridi’s philosophy of information is more a reprise of classical epistemology that only pays lip service to information theory but fails to address the important central questions of philosophy of information. Specifically, I will defend the view that notions that are associated with truth, knowledge, and meaning all can adequately be reconstructed in the context of modern information theory and that consequently there is no need to introduce a concept of semantic information.
