    A New Science Publishing System for a Budding Science Publishing Crisis.Carlos Fernandez-Patron & Eugenio Hardy - 2018 - Science and Engineering Ethics 24 (2):805-808.
The current science publishing system is in need of a positive transformation for the good of scientists and society as a whole. Herein, we propose features that, in our view, will distinguish the science publishing system of the future.

Predatory Grooming and Epistemic Infringement.Lauren Leydon-Hardy - 2021 - In Jennifer Lackey (ed.), Applied Epistemology. New York, NY: Oxford University Press. pp. 119-147.
Predatory grooming is a form of abuse most familiar from high-profile cases of sexual misconduct, for example, the Nassar case at Michigan State. Predatory groomers target individuals in a systematic effort to lead them into relationships in which they are vulnerable to exploitation. This is an example of a broader form of epistemic misconduct that Leydon-Hardy describes as epistemic infringement, where this involves the contravention of social and epistemic norms in a way that undermines our epistemic agency. In this (...)

Alexy's Thesis of the Necessary Connection between Law and Morality.Eugenio Bulygin - 2000 - Ratio Juris 13 (2):133-137.
This paper criticizes Alexy's argument on the necessary connection between law and morality. First of all, the author discusses some aspects of the notion of the claim to correctness. Basically, it is highly doubtful that all legal authorities share the same idea of moral correctness. Secondly, the author argues that the claim to correctness is not a defining characteristic of the concepts of “legal norm” and “legal system”. Hence, the thesis of a necessary connection between law and morality based on (...)

    Fuerzas, facultades y formas a priori en Kant.Eugenio Moya - 2019 - Con-Textos Kantianos 9:49-71.

  11. The Final Good in Aristotle's Ethics.W. F. R. Hardie - 1965 - Philosophy 40 (154):277-295.
Aristotle maintains that every man has, or should have, a single end, a target at which he aims. The doctrine is stated in E.N. I 2. ‘If, then, there is some end of the things we do which we desire for its own sake, and if we do not choose everything for the sake of something else, clearly this must be the good and the chief good. Will not the knowledge of it, then, have a great influence on life? Shall (...)

    Philosophy as Performed in Plato's "Theaetetus".Eugenio Benitez & Livia Guimaraes - 1993 - Review of Metaphysics 47 (2):297 - 328.
We examine the "Theaetetus" in the light of its juxtaposition of philosophical, mathematical and sophistical approaches to knowledge, which we show to be a prominent feature of the drama. We suggest that clarifying the nature of philosophy supersedes the question of knowledge as the main ambition of the "Theaetetus". Socrates shows Theaetetus that philosophy is not a demonstrative science, like geometry, but it is also not mere word-play, like sophistry. The nature of philosophy is revealed in Socrates' activity of examination (...)

    History of Italian Philosophy.Eugenio Garin - 2008 - Rodopi.
This book is a treasure house of Italian philosophy. Narrating and explaining the history of Italian philosophers from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, the author identifies the specificity, peculiarity, originality, and novelty of Italian philosophical thought in the men and women of the Renaissance. The vast intellectual output of the Renaissance can be traced back to a single philosophical stream beginning in Florence and fed by numerous converging human factors. This work offers historians and philosophers a vast survey (...)

(1 other version)De Spinoza a Hegel.

Mapping the philosophy and neuroscience nexus through citation analysis.Eugenio Petrovich & Marco Viola - 2024 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 14 (4):1-38.
We provide a quantitative analysis of the philosophy-neuroscience nexus using citation analysis. Combining bibliometric indicators of cross-field visibility with journal citation mapping techniques, we investigate four dimensions of the nexus: how the visibility of neuroscience in philosophy and of philosophy in neuroscience has changed over time, which areas of philosophy are more interested in neuroscience, which areas of neuroscience are more interested in philosophy, and how the trading zone between the two fields is configured. We also discuss two hypotheses: the (...)

Accommodating Surprise in Taxonomic Tasks: The Role of Expertise.Eugenio Alberdi, Derek H. Sleeman & Meg Korpi - 2000 - Cognitive Science 24 (1):53-91.
This paper reports a psychological study of human categorization that looked at the procedures used by expert scientists when dealing with puzzling items. Five professional botanists were asked to specify a category from a set of positive and negative instances. The target category in the study was defined by a feature that was unusual, hence situations of uncertainty and puzzlement were generated. Subjects were asked to think aloud while solving the tasks, and their verbal reports were analyzed. A number of (...)

A Syntactic Proof of the Decidability of First-Order Monadic Logic.Eugenio Orlandelli & Matteo Tesi - 2024 - Bulletin of the Section of Logic 53 (2):223-244.
Decidability of monadic first-order classical logic was established by Löwenheim in 1915. The proof made use of a semantic argument and a purely syntactic proof has never been provided. In the present paper we introduce a syntactic proof of decidability of monadic first-order logic in innex normal form which exploits G3-style sequent calculi. In particular, we introduce a cut- and contraction-free calculus having a (complexity-optimal) terminating proof-search procedure. We also show that this logic can be faithfully embedded in the modal (...)

In this article, I defend the idea that Kant’s interest in an emergent science in the 18th century as the Embriology (especially in the concept of epigenesis) allows to deepen in a soft naturalization of Kant’s trancendental idealism, as well as to justify the validity of a priori knowledge.

  27. Aristotle on the Best Life for a Man.W. F. R. Hardie - 1979 - Philosophy 54 (207):35 - 50.
Does Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics give one consistent answer to the question what life is best or two mutually inconsistent answers? In the First Book he says that we can agree to say that the best life is eudaimonia or eupraxia but must go on to say in what eudaimonia consists. By considering the specific nature of man as a thinking animal he reaches a conclusion: eudaimonia, the human good, is the activity of soul in accordance with virtue, and (...)

Antonio Stoppani's ‘Anthropozoic’ in the context of the Anthropocene.Eugenio Luciano & Elena Zanoni - 2023 - British Journal for the History of Science 56 (1):103-114.
The figure of Antonio Stoppani (1824–91), an Italian priest, geologist and patriot, has re-emerged in the last decade thanks to discussions gravitating around the ‘Anthropocene’ – a term used to designate a proposed geological time unit defined and characterized by the mark left by anthropogenic activities on geological records. Among these discussions, Stoppani is often considered a precursor for popularizing the term ‘Anthropozoic’, which he used to describe and characterize the latest ‘era’ of Earth's geological time. His writings, largely unknown (...)

This article explores the political thought of a leading Italian intellectual after his conversion from Jacobinism to liberalism. It shows the extent to which Foscolo was abreast of the then contemporary debate on constitutional government and nation-building. Moreover, it illustrates how he combined liberal with civic humanist and republican ideas, as well as idealism and Realpolitik in his perception of the problems faced by small nations struggling to be free in an era of international ideological conflict.

Richard Rorty has made popular the postmodern capitulation of philosophy in favour of literature. For him, the traditional efforts of philosophers and scientists to go more beyond o nearer language in search of the truth outside time, contingency and chance, have failed. Therefore, he proposes a postphilosophical culture in which a role of a new cultural tendency is assumed by poets and novelists. In view of all this, in this article, I reconstruct the fundamental hypothesis wich justifies that capitulation –the (...)
