Age differences in negative and positive expectancy bias in comorbid depression and anxiety.Dusanka Tadic, Colin MacLeod, Cindy M. Cabeleira, Viviana M. Wuthrich, Ronald M. Rapee & Romola S. Bucks - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (8):1531-1544.
ABSTRACTAnxious individuals report disproportionately negative expectations concerning the future, termed the negative expectancy bias. In contrast, ageing is associated with an inflated expectancy for positive future events. A recent study [Steinman, S. A., Smyth, F. L., Bucks, R. S., MacLeod, C., & Teachman, B. A.. Anxiety-linked expectancy bias across the adult lifespan. Cognition and Emotion, 27, 345–355. doi:10.1080/02699931.2012.711743] found using an interpretation bias task, a negative expectancy bias in young adults and positive expectancy bias in older adults with high trait (...)

Sleep Duration and Insomnia in Adolescents Seeking Treatment for Anxiety in Primary Health Care.Bente S. M. Haugland, Mari Hysing, Valborg Baste, Gro Janne Wergeland, Ronald M. Rapee, Asle Hoffart, Åshild T. Haaland & Jon Fauskanger Bjaastad - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
There is limited knowledge about sleep in adolescents with elevated levels of anxiety treated within primary health care settings, potentially resulting in sleep problems not being sufficiently addressed by primary health care workers. In the current study self-reported anxiety, insomnia, sleep onset latency, sleep duration, and depressive symptoms were assessed in 313 adolescents referred to treatment for anxiety within primary health care. Results showed that 38.1% of the adolescents met criteria for insomnia, 34.8% reported short sleep duration, and 83.1% reported (...)

Humanizing Evil: Psychoanalytic, Philosophical and Clinical Perspectives.Ronald C. Naso & Jon Mills (eds.) - 2015 - New York, NY: Routledge.
Psychoanalysis has traditionally had difficulty in accounting for the existence of evil. Freud saw it as a direct expression of unconscious forces, whereas more recent theorists have examined the links between early traumatic experiences and later ‘evil’ behaviour. _Humanizing Evil: Psychoanalytic, Philosophical and Clinical Perspectives _explores the controversies surrounding definitions of evil, and examines its various forms, from the destructive forces contained within the normal mind to the most horrific expressions observed in contemporary life. Ronald Naso and _Jon Mills_ (...)

A darwinian perspective: right premises, questionable conclusion. A commentary on Niall Shanks and Rebecca Pyles' "Evolution and medicine: the long reach of "Dr. Darwin"".Melnick Ronald & Vineis Paolo - 2008 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 3 (1):6.
As Dobzhansky wrote, nothing in biology makes sense outside the context of the evolutionary theory, and this truth has not been sufficiently explored yet by medicine. We comment on Shanks and Pyles' recently published paper, Evolution and medicine: the long reach of "Dr. Darwin", and discuss some recent advancements in the application of evolutionary theory to carcinogenesis. However, we disagree with Shanks and Pyles about the usefulness of animal experiments in predicting human hazards. Based on the darwinian observation of inter-species (...)

Formal accounts of negotiation tend to invoke the strategic models of conflict which have been impressively developed by game theorists in this half-century. For two decades, however, research on artificial intelligence (AI) has produced a different formal picture of the agent and of the rational deliberations of agents. AI's models are not based simply on intensities of preference and quantities of probability. AI's models consider that agents use language in various ways, that agents use and convey knowledge, that agents plan, (...)

Thinking about Higher Education.Ronald Barnett & Paul Gibbs (eds.) - 2014 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
With higher education around the world in a period of extreme flux, this volume explores its underlying philosophy, a core element of the ongoing debate. Offering a diverse range of perspectives from an international selection of renowned scholars of higher education, the book is full of imaginative insights that add up to a substantive contribution to the discussion. As universities attempt to adapt to a new environment characterized by stiff international competition, networked remote learning, burgeoning student numbers, and comparative performance (...)

Using the emerging technology of large-scale textual analysis, this study examines the use of the term ‘customer satisfaction’ and its variants in the annual reports issued by publicly traded U.S. corporations and filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission as Form 10-K. We document the frequency of the term’s occurrence in 10-Ks over the 1995–2013 period and the differences in usage across industries. We then relate the term’s usage in 10-Ks to subsequent scores from the American Customer Satisfaction Index to (...)

Responsible conduct by life scientists in an age of terrorism.Ronald M. Atlas - 2009 - Science and Engineering Ethics 15 (3):293-301.
The potential for dual use of research in the life sciences to be misused for harm raises a range of problems for the scientific community and policy makers. Various legal and ethical strategies are being implemented to reduce the threat of the misuse of research and knowledge in the life sciences by establishing a culture of responsible conduct.

Hermeneutical generosity and social criticism.Ronald Beiner - 1995 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 9 (4):447-464.
According to one model of social theory, the social theorist seeks to give as rich an account as possible of a society's own self?understanding or self?interpretation. The second model, by contrast, involves challenging the society's self?understanding on the basis of a radical vision of ultimate standards of. judgment. Charles Taylor claims that neither of these models should be privileged over the other, that both are equiprimordial ways of theorizing social life. However, Taylor does privilege the first model in his own (...)

    The Poeta-Theologus from Mussato to Landino.Ronald G. Witt - 2015 - The European Legacy 20 (5):450-461.
Fundamental to the modern conception of historical perspective was the position that nature had its own integrity and that a common human nature underlay human action in history. The first tenet was an achievement of the Scholastics, the second of Italian humanists of the fourteenth century. In order to justify the reading of ancient pagan texts an early humanist Albertino Mussato had resorted to the late ancient and medieval tradition that the pagan poets had been divinely inspired to predict the (...)

    Russell’s Indebtedness to Reid.Ronald Beanblossom - 1978 - The Monist 61 (2):192-204.
I have written elsewhere of Reid’s influence on a number of philosophers and philosophical movements, for example, G. E. Moore, H. H. Price, C. J. Ducasse, R.M. Chisholm, new realism, critical realism and pragmatism. One notable philosopher who is missing from this list is Bertrand Russell. Yet, when one examines Russell’s period of common sense realism it becomes apparent that he, like his friend G.E. Moore, is indebted to Thomas Reid. To establish Reid’s influence on Russell, I shall first examine (...)
