20th Century Philosophy

This chapter examines Ross’s account of moral virtue as one of his four intrinsic goods and argues that in key respects it’s superior to the better-known accounts of Aristotle and Kant. Among the topics covered are: (1) Ross’s treatment of virtue as a secondary or derivative good, one that consists in fitting attitudes to other, independently given values or duties—this in contrast with many virtue-ethical views; (2) his sharp separation between the right and the morally good, so a wrong act (...) can be virtuous and good; (3) his recognizing both de dicto and de re forms of virtue; (4) his making the primary locus of moral value occurrent attitudes rather than, as in Aristotle, dispositions; (5) his (unpersuasive) arguments that virtue is the greatest intrinsic good and the motive of duty the best motive; and (6) his interesting accounts of the moral worth of actions done from multiple motives or not done from a good motive that should be present and effective but isn’t. Following Toma in Understanding Nancy, Understanding Modernism (2023), one might define relations between modernity and modernism as a series of tensions connecting “then” and “now”. What follows suggests that, by employing sound as an ontological starting place, such tensions could be productively contemporized through an aesthetics of sonority, specifically a hermeneutic methodology I term “auditioning”. Amplifying the relational themes of coexistence and correspondence inherent to sound, this framing allows for the simultaneous consonance and dissonance of “then” and “now”. This essay (...) applies the motif of auditioning as a kind of meta-critique of recent attempts – e.g., Moraru’s Flat Aesthetics (2023) – to engage with the contemporary modern, in a manner that disrupts anthropocentrism. A partir del pensamiento presentado por Martin Heidegger en Sein und Zeit, podemos elaborar una crítica a la Modernidad filosófica. A nuestro juicio, los presupuestos de esa Modernidad parten del error cartesiano de la dualidad del mundo en dos dominios: la res extensa y la res cogitans, el cuerpo y el alma. A partir de ese error, la filosofía deriva en una ciencia del ente, que no tiene en cuenta al ser, núcleo del pensar filosófico. A partir del concepto heideggeriano (...) de Dasein podemos mostrar como no hay tal dualidad y como es necesario un giro radical en la filosofía. --- As of thought presente by Martin Heidegger in Sein und Zeit, we can develop a critique of philosophical Modernity. In our view, the budgets of the Modernity starts of the Cartesian mistake of the duality of the world in two domains: res extensa and res cogitans, body and soul. From that mistake, philosophy leads to a science of being, which does not considerer the Being, core of philosophical thinking. From Heidegger's concept of Dasein we can show how there is no such duality and as a radical change is necessary in philosophy. (shrink)

A partir de la lectura de las obras de Martin Heidegger de los años 30 podemos suponer como el concepto de "yo" que hay en sus obras de los años veinte, se torna en el concepto de "nosotros". Lo hace bajo la forma de Volk (pueblo). Este trabajo pretende desgranar qué caracteres fundamentales tienes dicho concepto y cuáles es el sentido que albergan en el caso de lo alemán, esto es, qué características tiene fundamentalmente el pueblo en y desde Heidegger. (...) ---- From a reading of Martin Heidegger's works of the 1930s we can surmise how the concept of "I" in his works of the 1920s becomes the concept of "we". It does so in the form of Volk (people). This paper aims to unravel the fundamental characteristics of this concept and the meaning they have in the case of the German, that is, what are the fundamental characteristics of the people in and since Heidegger. Enzo Traverso menciona que Portbou se ha convertido en un lugar de memoria. En ese pequeño pueblo de la frontera franco-española murió Walter Benjamin cuando huía del terror nazi desde Francia. Desde el otro lado de la frontera, en sentido contrario al de Benjamin, muchos republicanos huyeron del franquismo durante la Guerra Civil Española. Estos dos fenómenos hacen de Portbou un lugar de memoria, pues recuerda los desplazamientos forzados de hombres y mujeres que trataban de escapar del horror. Sin embargo, (...) ese mismo pueblo también es hoy un objeto privilegiado del turismo que, como también señala Traverso, ha sabido hacer de la memoria una mercancía, explotada por la lógica del neoliberalismo, fortaleciendo además aquella perspectiva de Uwe Steiner, según la cual “cada moda académica ha descubierto hasta ahora a su propio Walter Benjamin”. En el Libro de los pasajes, o en las notas que hoy componen las páginas que han llegado hasta nosotros bajo ese título, el mismo Benjamin sentenciaba que “la moda prescribe el ritual con el que el fetiche mercancía quiere ser adorado”, y que el afán de novedad se presenta siempre como “la quintaesencia de la falsa conciencia, cuyo agente incansable es la moda”. Memoria y mercancía confluyen en una tensión que acompaña a los homenajes y cantidad de trabajos académicos que todos los años desde hace algunas décadas se refieren a la figura de Benjamin. Quizás este trabajo sea uno más en la lista de compendios que engrosan la lista de la “moda Benjamin”. Sin embargo, las características que definen sus motivaciones están lejos de una empresa de beneficio comercial o de ínfula académica. Aunque no por ello puede decirse que el destino de lo que aquí se ofrece tenga su declive precisamente en la afirmación de estas tendencias. Ante ello, queremos manifestar que lo que creemos un aporte al ya rico campo de estudio de la teoría crítica en lengua castellana, solo se propone alcanzar un estatus modesto en medio de una rigurosa presentación de problemas, conceptos y contextos que la vida y obra de Benjamin permite seguir pensando en la actualidad, pues estudiarlas no es un trabajo sencillo y desafía constantemente la búsqueda de sentidos en medio de todo aquello que todavía hoy rodea su legado. Organizar la vida, más allá de fechas y lugares, supone el esfuerzo de la interpretación conceptual de Benjamin. (shrink)

Exponemos nuestra idea de que el liberalismo económico imperante en la tardomodernidad globalizada desarrolla la propuesta de una individualidad extrema que nosotros denominamos "empresas del yo". Éstas consisten en un modo de entender la vida de cada ser humano a partir de valores económicos que hacen que esas diversas vidas se gestionen a partir de la competencia entre unos y otros. Frente a eso, nuestra propuesta es la del desarrollo de una cooperación entre los diversos miembros de una comunidad a (...) fin de establecer pautas para que las comunidades sobrevivan al ímpetu de la globalización. ---- We put forward our idea that the prevailing economic liberalism in globalised late-modernity develops the proposal of an extreme individuality that we call "companies of the self". These consist of a way of understanding the life of each human being based on economic values that mean that these different lives are managed on the basis of competition between one another. Against this, our proposal is the development of cooperation between the various members of a community in order to establish guidelines for communities to survive the impetus of globalisation. Nuestro propósito es dilucidar la posibilidad de un planteamiento de lo político en el pensamiento de Heidegger. Es sabido que éste estuvo vinculado biográficamente al nazismo, pero creemos que en su filosofía hay conexiones con lo político más allá de la adhesión a la política del NSDAP. Es por eso que hemos de rastrear la posibilidad de una ontología de lo político, que exponga la preocupación por la vida en colectividad, y es en Heidegger donde encontramos una serie de pautas (...) a partir de las que desarrollar esa ontología, no desde la óptica de una filosofía política o una politología, sino desde el pensamiento acerca de los otros, de los demás con los que compartimos mundo, de la mera convivencia del uno con el otro. Siguiendo esto, usando las herramientas legadas por Heidegger, desmontaremos la política contemporánea, que creemos que no ha comprendido el sentido ontológico de lo político mismo, e iniciaremos el desarrollo de una ontología de lo político que nos permita elucubrar la construcción fáctica de una nueva política dentro de un nuevo marco ontológico existencial. ---- Our purpose is to elucidate the possibility of a political approach in Heidegger's thinking. It is known that he was biographically linked to Nazism, but we believe that in his philosophy there are connections with the political beyond adherence to NSDAP policy. That is why we have to trace the possibility of an ontology of the political, which exposes the concern for life in collectivity, and it is in Heidegger where we find a series of guidelines from which to develop that ontology, not from the perspective of a political philosophy or a politology, but from the thought about others, about the others with whom we share the world, about the mere coexistence of one with the other. Following this, using the tools bequeathed by Heidegger, we will dismantle contemporary politics, which we believe has not understood the ontological sense of the political itself, and we will initiate the development of an ontology of the political that allows us to elucidate the factual construction of a new policy within a new existential ontological framework. Para Merleau-Ponty, el filósofo es un testigo privilegiado de su propia investigación, la cual es un proceso de tanteos, idas y vueltas, avances y retrocesos que nunca termina en la afirmación de verdades adquiridas, sino que siempre apela al atributo principal de toda investigación filosófica: la libertad. Una investigación libre se aleja de la reproducción de los prejuicios, de la elevación al nivel de la verdad de cosas que no son verdaderas. La libertad para investigar se funda en una actitud (...) que acepta el error, que incluso se nutre de él, pues no pretende un final absoluto e incuestionable antes de los argumentos que, en todo caso, servirían de soporte para ello. This is where one will find a Martian giving a speech on education. The creature’s words are wholly based on those of the Portuguese philosopher Leonardo Coimbra (1883-1936), so we named the Martian after him. The idea of turning Leonardo Coimbra into a Martian comes from the critical remarks of Homem Cristo (1860-1943), who predicted that the language of the first would be found by humans once on Mars, as we find out in Leonardo Coimbra’s Obras Completas, vol. VIII (Lisboa: (...) Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, 2014), pp. 200-1. Although it is the result of an inquiry into Leonardo Coimbra, this publication is pointedly a creative (or Creationist, in the philosophical sense) interpretation of the author’s approach to education. All the same, we have been faithful to Leonardo’s philosophy of education, so whoever pays attention to the Martian will be exposed to some aspects of the Leonardian ethos. (shrink)

Los planteamientos filosóficos de Martin Heidegger son a menudo reseñados como un camino que el pensador alemán recorre a lo largo de su vida en su indagación por la pregunta por el sentido del ser. Dicha pregunta encierra la cuestión esencial de un método para el pensar. Primeramente ese método toma la forma de la fenomenología, que toma del que fuera su maestro Edmund Husserl, pero va modificando dicho método, dando saltos que lo llevan de la fenomenología a la hermenéutica. (...) Nuestra propuesta no pretende hacer un recorrido cronológico de esos saltos, analizando qué supone cada uno de ellos en los planteamientos heideggerianos. Más bien, perseguimos exponer cómo todo el planteamiento filosófico de Martin Heidegger se nutre de la concepción del método para el desarrollo de la cuestión del pensar, siendo el mismo camino filosófico una búsqueda del método apropiado para ese pensar. Por ello, expondremos las particularidades que ese camino recorre, no desde una exposición histórica, sino como un desarrollo del pensar siguiendo las pautas con las que Heidegger mismo "piensa" su filosofía, no para recorrer de nuevo su camino, sino para tener las herramientas necesarias para poder avanzar por el nuestro. ---- Martin Heidegger's philosophical approaches are often referred to as a path that the German thinker travels throughout his life in his inquiry into the question of the meaning of being. This question contains the essential question of a method for thinking. At first, this method takes the form of phenomenology, which he takes from his teacher Edmund Husserl, but he modifies this method, making leaps that lead him from phenomenology to hermeneutics. Our proposal does not intend to make a chronological tour of these leaps, analyzing what each one of them implies in the Heideggerian approaches. Rather, we seek to expose how Martin Heidegger's entire philosophical approach is nourished by the conception of method for the development of the question of thinking, the philosophical path itself being a search for the appropriate method for that thinking. Therefore, we will expose the particularities that this path goes through, not from a historical exposition, but as a development of thinking following the guidelines with which Heidegger himself "thinks" his philosophy, not to go through his path again, but to have the necessary tools to be able to advance through ours. In 1967, Paul Celan, a poet and Holocaust survivor, took part in a reading in Freiburg. There, he personally met the philosopher Martin Heidegger, who was Rector of the University of Freiburg promoted by the politics of National Socialism. Much has been said about the meeting between the two and the friendship and admiration that arose after the poet’s visit to the philosopher’s hut in the Black Forest. The most eloquent as well as the most enigmatic testimony is Celan’s poem (...) Todtnauberg, in which he expects to hear “a coming word” from the philosopher’s lips. We can speculate that, perhaps, this word was “forgiveness.” But Heidegger never apologized. After several encounters over the next three years, Celan eventually threw himself into the Seine. This chapter speculates whether it is possible that it was never hearing the word “forgiveness” for the crimes of Nazism that drove him to suicide. To reconstruct this suicide hypothesis, the chapter leans towards the existing biographical documentation on the author, both studies by specialists and Celan’s own epistolary exchange. It will also turn directly to his poetic work, especially his late work (in which I believe the encounter with Heidegger is important), where he expresses the absurdity of any attempt at communication, confronting existential anguish itself, perhaps that which led him to the abyss because he could not find the word “forgiveness” in the language of extermination, an otherwise impossible encounter. Humanizing AI is one of the most pressing issues in the development and use of artificial intelligence in recent years, and many scholars have highlighted the critical need for emphasizes humanistic values as a core foundation for developing and using AI for societal goods. Here, human subjectivity should be in the forefront AI development and integration, because “while algorithmic knowledge of humans can be vast and can outperform their own knowledge, it remains foreign to their subjectivity”, noted Razinsky (2023). Numerous (...) research works have attempted to apply the achievements of social sciences and humanities in making sense of AI development. Among these is Humanizing Artificial Intelligence: Psychoanalysis and the Problem of Control, edited by Fabio Tollon Possati, who pioneers applying psychoanalytic theories on AI and algorithms. Possati refers to this as “an odd couple,” a pairing he has explored in depth because he believes that focusing on neuropsychoanalysis and affective neuroscience, rather than solely on cognitive science, could yield more positive outcomes in AI development (Possati, 2021).
