The Societal Readiness Thinking Tool: A Practical Resource for Maturing the Societal Readiness of Research Projects.Michael J. Bernstein, Mathias Wullum Nielsen, Emil Alnor, André Brasil, Astrid Lykke Birkving, Tung Tung Chan, Erich Griessler, Stefan de Jong, Wouter van de Klippe, Ingeborg Meijer, Emad Yaghmaei, Peter Busch Nicolaisen, Mika Nieminen, Peter Novitzky & Niels Mejlgaard - 2022 - Science and Engineering Ethics 28 (1):1-32.
In this paper, we introduce the Societal Readiness Thinking Tool to aid researchers and innovators in developing research projects with greater responsiveness to societal values, needs, and expectations. The need for societally-focused approaches to research and innovation—complementary to Technology Readiness frameworks—is presented. Insights from responsible research and innovation concepts and practice, organized across critical stages of project-life cycles are discussed with reference to the development of the SR Thinking Tool. The tool is designed to complement not only shortfalls in TR (...)

Camels, Cormorants, and Kangaroo Rats: Integration and Synthesis in Organismal Biology After World War II.Joel B. Hagen - 2015 - Journal of the History of Biology 48 (2):169-199.
During the decades following World War II diverse groups of American biologists established a variety of distinctive approaches to organismal biology. Rhetorically, organismal biology could be used defensively to distinguish established research traditions from perceived threats from newly emerging fields such as molecular biology. But, organismal biologists were also interested in integrating biological disciplines and using a focus on organisms to synthesize levels of organization from molecules and cells to populations and communities. Part of this broad movement was the development (...)

The Politics of ethics: methods for acting, learning, and sometimes fighting with others in addressing ethics problems in organizational life.Richard P. Nielsen - 1996 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Can ethical character be stimulated and enabled? Cognitive understanding of organizational ethics issues is important and necessary, but not sufficient. Ethical behavior does not emerge automatically. Effective political method is necessary. While it may be difficult to teach ethical character, nonetheless, skill development with respect to joined ethics understanding and action-learning methods can help us develop the skills and confidence we need to actualize our ethical characters and social concerns. An action-learning approach to organizational ethics can help stimulate and enable (...)

    What can managers do about unethical management?Richard P. Nielsen - 1987 - Journal of Business Ethics 6 (4):309 - 320.
What can and should we do as managers and administrators when our sense of personal morality is at odds with our organization's behavior? Among the many alternatives are: (1) not think about it; (2) go along and get along; (3) protest; (4) conscientiously object; (5) leave; (6) secretly blow the whistle; (7) publicly blow the whistle; (8) secretly threaten to blow the whistle; (9) sabotage; and, (10) negotiate and build consensus for a change in the unethical behavior. This article considers (...)

  12. The private parts of animals: Aristotle on the teleology of sexual difference.Karen Nielsen - 2008 - Phronesis 53 (4-5):373-405.
In this paper I examine Aristotle's account of sexual difference in Generation of Animals, arguing that Aristotle conceives of the production of males as the result of a successful teleological process, while he sees the production of females as due to material forces that defeat the norms of nature. My suggestion is that Aristotle endorses what I call the "degrees of perfection" model. I challenge Devin Henry's attempt to argue that Aristotle explains sex determination exclusively with reference to material necessity (...)

Should We Hold the Obese Responsible?Morten Ebbe Juul Nielsen & Martin Marchman Andersen - 2014 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 23 (4):443-451.
Abstract:It is a common belief that obesity is wholly or partially a question of personal choice and personal responsibility. It is also widely assumed that when individuals are responsible for some unfortunate state of affairs, society bears no burden to compensate them. This article focuses on two conceptualizations of responsibility: backward-looking and forward-looking conceptualizations. When ascertaining responsibility in a backward-looking sense, one has to determine how that state of affairs came into being or where the agent stood in relation to (...)

    Organization Ethics from a Perspective of Praxis.Richard P. Nielsen - 1993 - Business Ethics Quarterly 3 (2):131-152.
Organization ethics praxis is theory and method of appropriate action for addressing ethics issues and developing ethical organizations. The perspective of praxis (theory and method of action) is important and different from the perspectives of theoria (theory of understanding), epistemology (ways of knowing), and ontology (ways of being/existing). Praxis is the least developed area within the field of organization ethics. Differences between theoria and praxis are considered within the context of Kohlberg—Gilligan developmental ethics where part of the controversy may be (...)

Why Health Matters to Justice: A Capability Theory Perspective.Lasse Nielsen - 2015 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 18 (2):403-415.
The capability approach, originated by Amartya Sen is among the most comprehensive and influential accounts of justice that applies to issues of health and health care. However, although health is always presumed as an important capability in Sen’s works, he never manages to fully explain why health is distinctively valuable. This paper provides an explanation. It does this by firstly laying out the general capability-based argument for health justice. It then discusses two recent attempts to justify why health is distinctively (...)

‘This war for men’s minds’: the birth of a human science in Cold War America.Janet Martin-Nielsen - 2010 - History of the Human Sciences 23 (5):131-155.
The past decade has seen an explosion of work on the history of the human sciences during the Cold War. This work, however, does not engage with one of the leading human sciences of the period: linguistics. This article begins to rectify this knowledge gap by investigating the influence of linguistics and its concept of study, language, on American public, political and intellectual life during the postwar and early Cold War years. I show that language emerged in three frameworks in (...)

    Pragmatism as Atheoreticism: Richard Rorty.Kai Nielsen - 2005 - Contemporary Pragmatism 2 (1):1-33.
This essay offers an account of Rorty's version of pragmatism after the so-called linguistic turn, including his attack on epistemology and metaphysics, his metaphilosophy, his theory of morality, and his political philosophy. Woven into this account of Rorty are some of the most important criticisms made of Rorty, and considerations about how Rorty has responded or could have responded.

    Wittgenstein on Language.Harry A. Nielsen - 1958 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 8:115-121.
The task of understanding Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations is more like that of understanding a difficult person than of grasping difficult ideas. It makes heavy demands upon the reader. He must first of all have the patience to stare at slight variations in language-uses until they look as marked as Wittgenstein wants them to look. Then he must be prepared for what looks like impassable break-offs in line of thought. Next, if he is a philosopher, he must listen to a great (...)

‘The Deepest and Most Rewarding Hole Ever Drilled’: Ice Cores and the Cold War in Greenland.Janet Martin-Nielsen - 2013 - Annals of Science 70 (1):47-70.
Summary The recovery of the Camp Century deep ice core in 1966 – the first ice core to reach all the way through a polar ice sheet to bedrock – marked a shift from an era of United States military dominated glaciological research in Greenland to an era of climate oriented research on the island. This paper aims to provide an understanding of this shift. I show that the Camp Century ice core was at the heart of a complex blend (...)

The appeal to reasonableness is ubiquitous in the work of John Rawls. Yet the concept itself is to be problematical (...)

    Decomposition of influence diagrams.Thomas D. Nielsen - 2002 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 12 (2):135-150.
When solving a decision problem we want to determine an optimal policy for the decision variables of interest. A policy for a decision variable is in principle a function over its past; however, some of the past may be irrelevant and for both communicational as well as computational reasons it is important not to deal with redundant variables in the policies. In this paper we present a method to decompose a decision problem into a collection of smaller sub-problems s.t. a (...)

SummaryI examine and extend Guy Lafrance's critique of Rawl's two principles of justice. Both principles are challengeable and the equal liberty principle is not satisfiable with the inequalities allowed by the second principle.

Opinions Regarding Polygamy Among LDS Church Members: Demographic Predictors.Michael Nielsen - 2009 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 31 (2):261-270.
People's opinions toward polygamy were examined in a study of 1369 adults who were current or former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Questions addressed several areas: polygamy and the law, respondents' perceptions of polygamous women, the potential link between legalizing gay marriage and legalizing polygamy, polygamists' reliance on social welfare programs, and the ability of teens raised in polygamy to leave that lifestyle. Consistent with the contact hypothesis, multiple regression analyses showed that people who knew (...)

    The Rational Knave.Kai Nielsen - 1988 - Idealistic Studies 18 (1):10-18.
Kurt Baier, in a series of important articles, defends the position that there is a necessary connection between rationality and morality. The immoralist, Baier would have it, no matter how well informed, clever, prudent, self-controlled, psychologically perceptive, or philosophically sophisticated, must, in acting immorally, exhibit some failure of rationality. Immoralists need not be irrational but they cannot be up to par rationally. Morality is in accordance with reason, immorality contrary to it. A personal policy of immoralism is contrary to reason.
